THE WORLD POPULATION

The world population is at present estimated to be 6,782 billion ( United States Census Bureau). According to forecast, it would reach 9,000 million in 2040.

Presently, 134 million children are born every year compared to 57 million deaths.

This trend has been favoured through:

■ Advance in modern medicine with increase in life expectancy,

■ High fertility rate, especially in many part of the developing world, 

■ Lack of coherent family planning policy in many countries,

■ Green revolution leading to high production in agricultural sector, preventingthereby any serious famine of world wide dimension.

These reasons among others have kept the annual population growth at a rate of 2.2% in the past years.

This development has lead to a rise in the number of mega cities, as more and more people are in search of jobs, better living standards, etc.. But the authorities of these cities could hardly cope with such increase, especially in provision of decent shelters to match the rapid population growth.
